Abstract

The objective of this project is to investigate the compound Pykrete. Pykrete is a combination of wood pulp with frozen water to create a concrete like substance hence the name “Pykrete.” Within the 10-week endeavor, we would like to further our knowledge of material science by exploring the strengths and weakness’s of different substances. And finally by researching, testing and analyzing, help those who seek it, a better understanding why compounds can provide a superior material to singular substances.

Update: Week 3

We began this week by partaking in another discussion outlining what our plans for the near and distant future are in terms of research, planning, testing, and demonstrations. The group decided on splitting the research into three separate components that could be then tied together with some additional information and experimentation. The three components of the project that we agreed upon are: the properties of ice, the properties of wood pulp (wood fiber), and how we could test the material strengths and weaknesses.

Another area of consideration for our project is purpose and applicability. While all the research and testing is well and good, the ultimate goal of our project is to display the benefits of Pykrete and present a way that it could be used. We haven't spent much time talking about this last part but as our knowledge of the composite, Pykrete, continues to grow, the applications for it will become more evident.

Goals to work towards:
  • Push on with the research on ice, wood pulp, and testing
  • Begin the preparations for experimentation
  • Establish a base presentation
